About this edition

Garo Pasdermadjian, better known by his nom de guerre, Armen Garo, wrote Why Armenian Should Be Free: Armenia’s Role in the Present War in October of 1918 in Washington, DC. It was published in December 1918 by the Hairenik Publishing Company in Boston.

Armen Garo was a former deputy in the Ottoman Parliament, representing Erzerum (Karin). He later served as commander of the Second Battalion of Armenian volunteers on the Caucasian front, before moving to the United States and leading the lobbying efforts there for the Armenian National Council of the Caucasus.

This introduction was written by George Nasmyth, Ph.D., former president of the Central Committee of the International Federation of Students. Nasmyth was also the secretary of the Massachussetts Joint Committee for a League of Free Nations.

We present the work here in its entirety, with the original photos.
