The Republic of Armenia is divided into ten provinces, called marzes, and the capital, Yerevan, which is counted separately. The marzes and their administrative centers are Aragatsotn (Ashtarak), Ararat (Artashat), Armavir (Armavir), Gegharkunik (Gavar), Kotayk (Hrazdan), Lori (Vanadzor), Shirak (Gyumri), Syunik (Kapan), Tavush (Ijevan) and Vayots Dzor (Yeghegnadzor).1

The boundaries are set by the Law on the Administrative-Territorial Division of the Republic of Armenia, passed in 1995. The Government of Armenia appoints and dismisses the governor of each marz. The marzes have no elected bodies and no budgets of their own, and the communities within them are not subordinate to the marz authorities.1
