Yerevan is the capital of Armenia. It began as the fortress of Erebuni, which King Argishti I of the kingdom of Van founded in 782 BC on the hill of Arin-Berd in what is now the southeast of the city. The founding inscription, found at the main gate in 1958, is kept in the museum on the site.1 The city’s own account names Argishti as the founder of Yerevan.2

Yerevan is counted separately from the ten provinces of Armenia.3 Under the Russian Empire the city was called Erivan, and it received the status of a town in 1877.1

On 28 May 1918 the Armenian National Council proclaimed itself the supreme authority over the Armenian provinces, and Yerevan became the capital of the First Republic of Armenia.4
