The monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin stand in Lori. They were centers of learning in the time of the Kiurikian dynasty, and Sanahin was known for its schools of manuscript illumination and calligraphy. Haghpat was founded in 976 and its oldest church was finished by 991. The main church of Sanahin dates from the middle of the tenth century, and both monasteries grew until the thirteenth. UNESCO placed them on the World Heritage List in 1996.2
