Between the Kura and the Araxes

Paytakaran is one of the fifteen provinces of Greater Armenia, east of Artsakh.1 Its name is the Armenian form of Baylaqan, a town of medieval Arran, the land of Caucasian Albania. The town lay between the Kura and the Araxes in the Mil steppe, and its ruins are southeast of Shusha.2

Tradition credits the Sasanian king Kavad with the founding of the town. Baylaqan was a small prosperous town known for its textiles, on the main road from Azerbaijan into the Caucasus. The Mongols took and burned it in 1220, and Timur rebuilt it and joined it to the Araxes by a canal. It later fell into ruin.2
