The Armenakan Party was founded in Van in the autumn of 1885, with Mkrtich Portukalian as its guiding spirit. Its aim was to win for the Armenians the right to rule themselves, through revolution.1 It is called the first political party in Armenian history.2 The city of Van was its home.

In 1921 the Armenakan Party was one of four parties that united to form the Armenian Democratic Liberal Party.2
