Anania Shirakatsi was the first Armenian mathematician and is called the father of science in Armenia. He lived from about 610 to about 685.1
He was born in Shirak, a district of Ayrarat, the central province of historic Armenia. His teacher was Tychicus of Trebizond, in First Armenia, and Anania spent eight years there learning the foundations of arithmetic.1
His Book of Arithmetic has three parts: tables of operations, twenty-four problems with their solutions, and entertaining puzzles. His Ashkharhatsuyts, or Geography, gives detailed information on Greater Armenia, Persia and the Caucasus. It contains no maps.1 He also wrote on chronology and astronomy.1
